In 2003 University of Maine at Presque Isle built the Maine Solar System Model, a scale model of our solar system, along Route 1. The scale is 1:93M – that makes 1 mile of road equal to 93,000,000 miles of space. The sun is at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Pluto is in Houlton, 40 miles south on Route 1. Students of local schools built the model planets.
In September of 2011 I drove along Route 1 to see the Maine Solar System Model. I had read a New York Times article, which piqued my interest. My impression from the article was that crumbling buildings would be surrounding the planet models.
When I got there, there were no crumbing buildings around the planets. Instead the planets were located in unexpected locations: farm, cemetery, car dealership, hotel parking lot, and a baseball field.
These images of the Maine Solar System Model show the planets. Instead of planets surrounded by dark, empty space, these planets are surrounded by a man-made cosmos, creating a new meaning for space.
